Hot on the heels of the work done in the United Kingdom and Europe to audit biogas companies in line with the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) standard, Singapore-based Double Helix Tracking Technologies (DoubleHelix) has now launched the service (October 2022) to the biofuel production and trading market in Singapore, Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
Already, three companies are in the process of ISCC certification with DoubleHelix:
The Singapore subsidiary of China state-owned oil trading company CNOOC International Trade Co., Ltd., with a trading volume of both crude and oil products of over 93 million tons in 2021, to be certified under the ISCC EU scheme as a trader, enabling it to meet the stringent requirements to supply low-carbon fuels to EU countries;
Another Singapore oil trading company, Arc Energy Trading, involved in trading across various types of materials with customers and suppliers consisting of oil majors, state-owned oil companies and independent refineries;
A Singapore bunker trading and storage company, Golden Island Diesel Oil Trading, intending to supply their customers with ISCC EU certified biofuel.
Jomaine Tang, Regional Manager for DoubleHelix in Singapore, is leading the company’s roll out of ISCC certification in Singapore and Southeast Asia. She is seeing a lot of interest from companies wishing to demonstrate that their biofuels and other products are sustainably produced, and comply with the stringent European Union Renewable Energy Directive (RED II).
Concurrently, DoubleHelix is geared up to extend its ISCC certification to Indonesia, particularly in the Palm Oil and Used Cooking Oil (UCO) sectors.
On 5 October this year, MPA sent a circular to all bunker suppliers and bunker craft operators on the requirements to supply biofuel within the Port of Singapore to vessels, with a view to supporting trials to explore the carbon reduction potential of biofuel.
MPA also stated that “the bunker supplier is encouraged to supply International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) certified biofuel”.
One local company, Alpha Biofuels, is believed to be the first to supply ISCC certified biodiesel, refined from Used Cooking Oil collected in Singapore, as a bunkering fuel for an ocean-going vessel, as announced in July 2021. See the Manifold Times report here.
DoubleHelix first launched its ISCC certification service in the UK earlier this year. Ixora Energy, a major generator of biogas through Anaerobic Digestion (AD) was its first customer.
Achieving certification involved an extensive third-party audit covering all operations and supply chains across Ixora Energy’s sites, including how feedstock for the anaerobic digestion (AD) process is sourced and managed to generate biomethane that is injected into the UK energy grid. See the Ixora Energy Case study here.
To assist the bunkering industry in Singapore, DoubleHelix is collaborating with experienced Quality Management for Bunker Supply Chain (QMBS) consultant Jaya Anand, who has carried out assignments for Glencore Singapore, Marubeni International and Costank (Cosco Shipping).
