DoubleHelix adds International Sustainability & Carbon Certification to its Global Range of Due Diligence & Verification Services

DoubleHelix Tracking Technologies (DoubleHelix) is launching International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) to companies in Singapore, Indonesia, and the wider Asia-Pacific market.

This follows a successful launch of ISCC in the United Kingdom and Europe, in partnership with EnviroSense, an established UK company specialising in technical audit, verification and due diligence services to the renewable energy and waste industry. Their work together has included the audit of three biomethane gas plants in the United Kingdom, enabling Ixora Energy to achieve International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) for the first time.

“Ixora Energy is a fine example of how well-structured anaerobic digestion (AD) supply chains underpin the circular economy and how they have integrated this for sustainable farming businesses,” Mr Darren Thomas, CEO of DoubleHelix said, as he explained what was involved in auditing the sourcing and production processes to achieve the ISCC certification.

The three certified biomethane AD plants that are managed by Ixora – Condate Biogas, Gorst Energy and Sustainable Energy Generation (SEG) – are located in south-west region of the UK. These plants utilise raw material feedstocks, including cereal crops like rye, barley, oats, wheat, and maize, as well as waste materials and residues, like whey, poultry litter, and farmyard manure, collected from local sources.

A DoubleHelix case study on the Ixora Energy audit, notes that the refined biomethane gas generated from this process is injected straight into the UK’s National Grid. The renewable electricity and gas generated is sufficient to power local communities where the anaerobic plants are located.

Not only is there sufficient power generated to run all of the Ixora plants, but all the waste residues left over after the AD process goes back to the farms to be used as a more effective organic fertiliser, replacing untreated manure and waste.

The case study quotes Charles Kane, Sustainability Director, Ixora Energy, who said the audit highlighted how the company can maintain its integrity with local farm businesses, which creates an effective circular economy of its own.

“ISCC certification is a fantastic milestone for us, as it showcases the work we do to build local farm businesses into our supply chains. We have always believed in working together with farms and communities so that everyone benefits from green energy production through AD.”
Charles Kane, Sustainability Director, Ixora Energy

He acknowledged that local energy production is an advantage when compared with other sources of green energy, including biofuels, which often involve shipping feedstock internationally, and that has been known to lead to deforestation.

Mr Kane said he was pleased that the company’s achievements in generating sustainable energy locally have been recognised by meeting the much sought-after international standard, which also meets the stringent requirements of the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive II.

“DoubleHelix has already received a lot of interest in ISCC from businesses in Southeast Asia and further afield,” Mr Thomas confirmed, noting that the companies involved are active in many relevant sectors, including biofuels, used cooking oil, plastic packaging and palm oil mill effluent (POME).

About International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC)

ISCC is a global certification system for implementation of the Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC) (RED II). Being ISCC certified confirms a company’s compliance with the RED II. The certification also promotes several core values, including traceable supply chains, protection of high biodiversity habitats and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. ISCC’s key objective is to contribute to the implementation of environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable production methods and the use of a wide range of types of biomass in global supply chains. https://www.iscc-system.org/about/objectives/
